Winter is here, New Years Resolutions are coming. You have thought about starting to workout, about what kind of gym you want to sign up for or start going to again. What healthy foods you are going to eat. Thinking of everything and anything involving fitness and health. Which includes getting a personal trainer.
TO TRAIN OR NOT TO TRAIN?
Everyone loves the idea of a personal trainer. Not everyone loves the price. Our trainers at Evolve range from $60-$100 per 50 minute session. These are pretty standard prices for a good personal trainer. Now if you look at training prices at big box gyms like LA Fitness and 24 Hour Fitness their prices may seem lower. However, they are only 25 minute sessions. You’d be potentially spending more than at Evolve Fitness Lab or other boutique gyms like us if you did a 50 minute session at a big box gym. You also have to sign either a 6-month or 12-month contract that you can’t adjust or back out of if you are unsatisfied.
WHY SO MUCH? WHAT IS A “GOOD” TRAINER?
All of our trainers have years of experience and a strong educational background. All of us are continuously going through Continuing Education to be updated on new information, reading different articles through the week, testing mobility and strength exercises on ourselves so we know how to teach and cue, use science to backup our programming for our clients and classes, know how to do screen testing to see how our clients move and what adjustments and are needed for their workouts.
We all have a great understanding on how the body moves and how to implement strength exercises to help correct common dysfunctions people may have. That does not mean we are Physical Therapist. If someone is in need of physical therapy or corrective therapy, we will recommend great physical therapists, chiropractors, etc, for our clients to see if needed. We stay in our scope of practice and do what you are here to do, provide workout instruction and facilitate you reaching your goals.
Now there are quality trainers like us at big box gyms. However, the fitness industry has been flooded with trainers who have a big following on social media and got a weekend certification because she/he helped her/his buddy lose some weight one time and it became a passion. It’s not a bad start! Not trying to trash talk people who do this. This trainer may not be worth $60 per session. If you are looking for a cheaper trainer, this is the person. You’ll get some kick ass workouts. But are they specific towards your goals? Can you do these movements in a healthy manner and do they work well for your unique biomechanics? Is this trainer watching your form and cueing you? Are you getting supplemental exercises to correct dysfunction in weaker areas that will contribute to improving your strength and form on bigger lifts? (For example, glute bridges and deadbugs to improve the deadlift.)
ARE THE BENEFITS WORTH MORE THAN IT COST?
YEAH THEY ARE!! You are getting workouts designed for you, your current strength and body mechanics, plus mobility exercises to improve body mechanics. Homework to continue anaerobic and aerobic work to help you see results. Learning what goes into a good workout, learning what kind of workouts are going to go be most beneficial for your goals, and how to workout on your own. And so much more…. YOU BECOME STRONG, HEALTHY, AND KNOWLEDGEABLE IN THE GYM. We spend a lot of money on our education and CEU’s (I’m currently rotting on the inside from paying my way through grad school) and we want you to teach you these things that are specific and interesting to you! People are paying car payments without thinking four times. I’m assuming we all think at least 2 or 3 times before that. Still, we spend $200-$500/month on a machine that will eventually break down. Then we get another one. We only get one body. We can’t afford not to spend money on our health and wellness. We can’t replace it. Until technology allows us to be the six million dollar man. However, that cost six million dollars. Training is much cheaper than a million dollars!
